The Faculty of Law at Unissula Ranks Among the Best Law Faculties in Indonesia

Failing to gain a place at a state university law faculty through the UTBK SNBT national test or an independent route is not the end of everything. For years the public has assumed that graduates of state campuses find work easily. In fact that is not the case.

Reality shows that law faculties at private universities have many strengths that are in no way inferior to state campuses — such as the Faculty of Law at Universitas Islam Sultan Agung (Unissula) in Semarang, which is of exceptional quality.

The Rector of Unissula, Prof Dr Gunarto SH MH, set out several reasons for choosing the Faculty of Law at Unissula.

First, all of its study programmes hold the Excellent (Unggul) accreditation from BAN-PT: the Bachelor of Laws, the Master of Laws, the Notary Master's Programme and the Doctoral Programme in Law.

Beyond the Excellent accreditation from BAN-PT, all of its programmes also hold international ASIC accreditation, awarded by the London-based body with Premier status.

Second, the Faculty of Law at Unissula has produced many public figures: judges, prosecutors, government officials, legislators, advocates, academics and researchers, and human rights activists. It also opens career opportunities in the field of Islamic law, including Islamic banking, zakat institutions and Islamic legal counselling.

Third, it has produced many professors. Among those inaugurated by the Faculty of Law at Unissula are the owner of Bank Arto Moro, Prof Dr H Subyakto SH MH MM; the renowned Indonesian scholar Prof Yahya Zainul Ma'arif SPsi Lc PhD, widely known as Buya Yahya; and the special staff to the Minister of Home Affairs, Prof Dr Hoiruddin Hasibuan SH MHum (Police, ret.). Other prominent figures include the Inspector General of the National Police, Commissioner General Prof Dr Dedi Prasetyo SH MHum MSi MM; Supreme Court Justice Prof Dr KPH Yanto SH MH; and the advocate and Deputy Chair of Commission II of the House of Representatives, Prof Junimart Girsang, among others.

The large number of professors inaugurated reflects the high academic quality of the Faculty of Law at Unissula, because such inaugurations reflect an institution's success in producing academically productive lecturers, as well as a major contribution to the development of legal scholarship.

Fourth, the Faculty of Law at Unissula is supported by modern facilities of international standard to support the learning process.

Its curriculum is also highly innovative and responsive to the changing times.

Fifth, the Faculty of Law at Unissula is committed to realising its internationalisation programme.

From the 2025–2026 academic year, the Faculty of Law at Unissula will open four international classes for the Bachelor of Laws, the Master of Laws, the Notary Master's Programme and the Doctoral Programme in Law. These classes will bring together students from Indonesia and abroad, with teaching in two languages: Indonesian and English.

The Faculty of Law at Unissula also actively builds cooperation with various international universities, such as Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt; the University of Wollongong in Malaysia; and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. One form this cooperation takes is the exchange of lecturers and students.

In November 2024, for example, the Faculty of Law at Unissula sent 19 students to the University of Wollongong in Malaysia to take part in a student exchange programme.

The faculty also regularly holds expert lectures featuring legal scholars from abroad, as well as visits to overseas campuses.

The Faculty of Law at Unissula has even held workshops to design an international curriculum relevant to developments in global law. These activities involve lecturers and students from various countries, including Timor-Leste, Somalia, Malaysia and Pakistan.
