Unissula and the Judicial Commission Strengthen Research and Community Service

(unissula.ac.id) The Rector of Unissula, Prof Dr Gunarto SH MHum, said it is a matter of pride for the wider Unissula family to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Judicial Commission.

The agreement was signed by the Rector of Unissula and the Chair of the Judicial Commission, Prof Dr Mukti Jafar Nur Dewata SH MHum, on the Kaligawe campus on Monday (18/7/2022). The signing was accompanied by a public lecture on the theme of the Judicial Commission's role in overseeing judges.

"Joint research could address, for example, improving the standard of judicial conduct — particularly in upholding justice, which does not rest on statute alone. Collaborative research between academics and the Commission on new ideas for improving the quality of judges is very much needed at present," he explained.

The Chair of the Judicial Commission, Prof Dr Mukti Jafar Nur Dewata, said much the same. In his view, strategic steps are needed on specific programmes that benefit both parties under this memorandum.

On the one hand, the Commission, with its still limited human resources, greatly needs the support of academics — both lecturers and students — in conducting joint research on matters relating to its work.

"Campuses have freedom in research and community service. At the same time, we are aware of our resource limitations," he explained.

"The Commission is needed to oversee the performance of judges, because the internal oversight system has so far been less than optimal in upholding the honour and dignity of the judiciary and safeguarding judicial conduct. Hence the need for the Commission as an external overseer. The Commission is also independent and has the authority to propose the appointment of supreme court justices and ad hoc judges to the House of Representatives for approval," he explained.

Also present were the Dean of the Faculty of Law at Unissula, Dr Bambang Tri Bawono SH MH; YBWSA patron Drs Ahmad Azhar Combo; the Chair of the YBWSA Board, Hasan Toha Putra MBA; Vice Rector I Dr Andre Sugiono ST MM; Vice Rector II Dedi Rusdi SE MSi Akt CA; and Vice Rector III M Qomaruddin ST MSc PhD.
