Representing Indonesia at a UN Conference: The Regent Honours an Outstanding Student from Sampang

The Regent of Sampang, H Slamet Junaidi, together with the regional leadership forum, honoured and saw off Siti Aisyah Amini, the sole Indonesian delegate to the summit of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), at the Trunojoyo Pavilion on Sunday (28/8/2022).

The student of Universitas Islam Sultan Agung (Unissula) Semarang, who comes from Sampang Regency, will attend the UN conference in Rome from 31 August to 4 September 2022.

A finalist in the 2021 Kacong Jebbing Sampang tourism ambassador contest, she will voice the aspirations of Indonesia's young people, especially the children of fishing families, through the concept of digital fisheries.

In her view the concept of digital fisheries must be promoted across the sector — from catching and production to marketing — so that the children of fishing families see the potential and the opportunity to carry on a calling that supports food security.

"We want the children of fishers, when asked what they aspire to, to answer firmly that they wish to carry on that calling. This is homework for all of us, because over time the number of people in the fishing profession keeps declining," she said.

One factor behind the falling interest in continuing that calling is that fishing methods still rely on traditional systems.

"If catching, production and marketing were already modern, it is quite possible that many young people would also become fishers and support food security," she stressed.

The Regent of Sampang, H Slamet Junaidi, said he was proud of the achievement of a student from the coastal city who has been trusted and invited to represent Indonesia at a UN forum.

He hopes Siti Aisyah Amini will bring honour to her nation and country and that her example will be followed by other young people of Sampang.

"Bring honour to Sampang, Madura and Indonesia on the international stage. Siti Aisyah Amini is proof that the sons and daughters of our region can excel and be noticed internationally," he said.

Besides free accommodation and transport from the UN, as a token of appreciation the Regent of Sampang gave Siti Aisyah Amini a stipend of 700 dollars.
